Traditions of Christmas
December 23rd, 2008My tradition is different than yours? So what it's still Christmas.
Lets get our definition of tradition down... The word tradition comes from the Latin word traditio which means to hand down or hand over (wikipeida.org).
Here at the '411 House' well lets just say it might not be a normal Christmas tradition. We usually have no snow. Actually I don't think we've ever had snow for Christmas. Also we normally don't open presents now until the late afternoon on Christmas and last year we even went fishing Christmas Eve. Finally I remember one year instead of Turkey we grilled steaks.
Are our traditions better or worse than yours? Of course not but whats important in all the examples I gave above was family. We did it together and we had the right spirit in our hearts. So whatever your tradition is this Christmas enjoy it with the ones you love.

Materialism at Christmas
December 21st, 2008Is Santa great? Sure he is but you know that it's always better to give than receive. It's kind of like the 'Pay it Forward' theme from the movie by the same name. Do you remember what you got for Christmas last year? I gave my sister-in-law a tacky Blowup Snowman for her yard and she didn't even take it home. : ) I still have it and put it up at my house this year. It was more of a prank gift than anything else. She lives in a 'high class' neighborhood and a Blowup Snowman just wouldn't do I guess.
Lets define Materialism.
Princeton University (Princeton.edu) defines materialism as a desire for wealth and material possessions with little interest in ethical or spiritual matters.
Shouldn't Christmas be exactly the opposite of materialism? Christmas is both ethical and spiritual.
As far as ethical is considered didn't Jesus (which is what Christmas is all about) offer a new commandment of love thy neighbor as thyself. I don't think you can get more ethical than that.
As far as spritual should I even have to say it? What is the true meaning of Christmas?
So in conclusion yes the presents are nice and may everyone get what they want but lets keep Christmas in perspective.
